In
the early 1990’s, Edwin Wong had a vision (a vision
also shared by many of Hawaii’s leaders) to make
Hawaii the financial and technological East-West Center
of the Pacific. Hawaii’s mid-pacific location
gives businesses in Hawaii the geographical advantage
of being centrally located between the continental U.S.
and Asia. Hawaii enjoys a time zone advantage which
enables communication between Hawaii and both the U.S.
East Coast and Asia during the same business day.
While in college Edwin learned that
one of the primary obstacles for realizing his dream
for Hawaii was the high telecommunication costs associated
with doing business with the U.S. and Asia. Affordable
communication would allow businesses to economically
export intellectual capital to Asia and the mainland
U.S. from paradise. Edwin envisioned a day when people
in Hawaii would be able to send wireless messages, trade
stocks, and communicate with the world affordably from
the beautiful beaches of Hawaii.
Edwin approached Gabriel Wong (his father)
and Po Sing Tsui with his dream of making Hawaii the
financial and technological East-West Center of the
Pacific. Gabriel, a consummate engineer formerly with
AT&T Western Electric and GT&E, and Po Sing,
a gifted and technical-savvy family friend, embraced
Edwin’s vision.
Gabriel and Po Sing collaborated and
invented a novel, robust, and highly efficient telecommunication
protocol which they believed would make telecommunication
more cost effective. Today their telecommunication protocol
is utilized in many modern day wirelesses and wired
data communication products, including but not limited
to new generation Internet cell phones and cable modem
technologies.
Today Edwin is CEO and Gabriel is Chairman
of GPNE.
Due to technologies like GPNE’s
patents, Hawaii is now several steps closer to realizing
Edwin's dream, and people all over the world are enjoying
more robust and affordable data communications.
How GPNE got its name:
GPNE was named after its original founders.
